1.0 BACKGROUND
1.1 Designer with management, financial, logistics and procurement
experience, specialising in the field of educational building.
Design Director of Educational Design Group specialising in
the Educational Sector.
1.2 Member of the Chartered Institute for Designers and Chartered
Institute
of Purchasing and Supply.
1.3 Former Chief and Principal Designer for the Department
for Education is the leading authority in the UK regarding
requirements for educational buildings.
1.4 A member of the committee that advises and supports British
Standards regarding standards for laboratory and educational
furniture.
1.5 Former contributor to the Times Educational Supplement,
Managing Schools Today, Schools Colleges & University
Review and Education Today relating to premises management,
planning and 'Value for Money' issues. Former Editor of Resources
Manager Today published by Questions Publishing. Currently
on the editorial board of Educational Life which was launched
in September 2001.
1.6 On leaving the Department for Education all current Design
& Educational Research is now at Royal College of Art
in the
Architecture, Interior and Furniture Design School. This work
is 'on hold' owing to current school projects and advisory
work.
2.0 CAREER
2.1 1994 to date
Design Director for Educational Design Group specialising
in designing for school and universities. The professional
work undertaken includes; educational consultant advising
LEAs regarding PFls and schools on funding, curriculum space
analysis, logistics, policy, furniture procurement and design,
building design and project management and other building
related matters. Clients include, London Borough of Enfield,
London Borough of Newham, Essex County Council, Dupont Switzerland,
AtoZ Supplies, 300 plus Foundation and Community Schools in
the UK.
2.2 1979-94
Chief Designer and Principal Officer for Department for Education
(DFE) I managing administrative staff, developing design teams
and working closely with design consultants. The post demanded
controlling of multi-
million pound programmes of work liaising with commercial
companies and LEAs. The level of the post included advising
ministers of the day and other professionals regarding design
and procurement matters as it related to education. This required
a close liaison with schools, colleges and Local Authorities
on contractual matters. At times mediation was required between
educational establishments and commercial companies as the
projects progressed. The work in representing the DFE on British
Standard committees, supporting international exhibitions
in China and Switzerland, scheduling and advising the furniture
and equipment for the Lord Byron School in Leninakhan, Armenia.
Advised the DFE regarding the nomination of a suitable team
to list and evaluate the condition of the Kuwait schools following
the Gulf War.
Contributing to key government policy regarding the City
Technology College Initiative and Grant Maintained Schools.
Formulating the cost parameters for the two government programmes.
2.3 1973-79
Deputy Leader to the Design Group at Essex County Council
designing and developing furniture products for use in educational
buildings. Managing design staff and liaising with architects
and other building professionals. Representing the Architects
Department when reporting to County Council Committees on
cost related matters.
2.4 1970- 73
Furniture and Product Designer at the Crown Suppliers, designing
furniture for government departments, including office furniture
for the House of Lords and Commons, Kew Public Records Office,
Post Office and the HM Services personnel. Resolving UK logistical
and accommodation problems following the expulsion of the
Asian Ugandans.
